The Global Health Course is aimed at physicians and other health care providers working in tropical medicine, travelers’ health, and migrant health. It is a rigorous, full-time certificate preparation course that emphasizes case-based lectures and practical knowledge for practicing clinician and public health professionals.
The Global Health Course is intended for the following applicants:
- Practicing providers (physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants) from the United States and abroad (non-US based)
- Non-practicing providers who are International Medical Graduates (IMG) currently living in the United States
- University of Minnesota residents and fellows: Medicine, Medicine-Pediatrics, Pediatrics
- Non-UMN residents and fellows
- University of Minnesota 4th year medical students (3rd year medical students with permission from Global Health faculty)
- Non-UMN 4th year medical students (3rd year medical students with permission from Global Health faculty)
Practicing Providers:
MDs, Nurse Practitioners (NP), or Physician Assistants (PA); International Medical Graduates (IMGs) currently living in the United States, and international participants from developed countries:
- Practicing providers can take the course by the day or week, in any order, over multiple years.
- Modules 1-4: $675/week or $2,700 for Block 1
- Modules 5-8: $775/week or $3,100 for Block 2 (laboratory component)
- Total eight-week course fees: $5,800
International participants from developing countries:
- Modules 1-4: $350/week ($1,400 total for Block 1)
- Modules 5-8: $400/week ($1,600 total for Block 2)

Participants who are not US citizens or permanent residents will require a US visa to enter the United States. Generally it is advised that applicants apply for a B1/B2 visa to enter the US; a letter of invitation can be provided by our office. While making a note of your area of expertise is not a requirement to acceptance, we encourage participants to share their experience during the course to provide a more well-rounded discussion.
UMN Residents in Internal Medicine, Medicine-Pediatrics, Pediatrics, and 3rd/4th year medical students:
These residents and students can participate in the Course at no cost, with advanced permission from their program director or program coordinator in order to schedule the course as an elective rotation.
Eligible residents/fellows from non-UMN affiliated programs:
- Modules 1-4: $350/week ($1,400 total for Block 1)
- Modules 5-8: $400/week ($1,600 total for Block 2)
- Total eight-week course fees: $3,000
Course Materials:
Because there is no single textbook intended for ASTMH study, participants may want to split the cost of several key reference materials with others in the class by sharing study materials. A recommended reading list will be provided to participants and all daily handouts and supplemental readings will be provided in class as needed.
Note: Scholarships are not offered at this time.
